What is Fairer than Fair Trade chocolate?
The vast, vast majority of cocoa beans are not processed with the countries they are grown. Up to the point of processing the cocoa bean is effectively a commodity. Most of the value in the bean is realised after it is processed. Fair trade pays a slightly higher premium for the commodity, but again the countries who produce that bean lose out on the value thereafter. Raise trade also known as fairer than fair trade applies to beans that are processed in country thus leaving more of the beans value in the local economy. The majority of our range now uses raise trade beans from North West Madagascar.
